Ragini Gandhari is a melody of sadness. Wife of Raga Malkaus, she is represented in this painting as a love-sick heroine. She is being consoled by her confident, that her lover would soon be arriving. In the meantime a strong gust of wind blows off the curtain of the pavilion as well as the clothes of the ladies. A dust devil is seen in the background, spiraling into the sky. In the hot months of May and June dust devils are commonly seen in the countryside of north India.
