Product Description

This painting is from the Baramasa series of Kangra paintings depicting month of Chaitra (March-April). The lovers are seated on a terrace, with flowering shrubs and trees in the background in which birds of many kinds are warbling in music. The lady is describing the charm of Chaitra, and exhorting her husband to remain at home. The painting is inspired by the following poem (translated to English) of famous Hindi poet Keshavdas from Kavipriya :

Lovely creepers are in bloom, blossoming trees are young once more, streams and lakes are full of water.
Women, aglow with passion, dressed in their best, abandon themselves to sports of love.
The parrot, the maina and the koel are singing songs of love.
What to say of going away, one should not allow his mind to waver in the month of Chaitra, my love?
